The railway forum welcomes Professor Uff’s report into the Southall accident

Brian Mellitt, Chairman of The Railway Forum, welcomed the publication today of Professor John Uff’s report following the public inquiry into the rail accident at Southall on 19th September 1997. He indicated that Professor Uff’s report should be read in conjunction with that of the Health & Safety Commission on Railtrack, published earlier this week. This concluded that "Railtrack is diligent in separating commercial and safety interests. No evidence was found that commercial interests outweigh safety considerations in Railtrack".
Commenting further, Brian Mellitt said, "A positive consequence of privatisation has been the establishment of a legally based safety regime which is now followed by everyone in the industry. The common safety management system has continually evolved since privatisation. We do appreciate that there have been some detailed shortcomings in its application, but these are being resolved and the system is now bedding down".
"As measured by the official figures produced by the Health & Safety Commission, the trend in safety performance on Britain’s Railways has steadily improved over the last few years. I believe that the rail industry is committed to maintaining this improvement ".
