Britain's train operators today applauded the decision of Rail Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) to call off strike action by rail guards.

ATOC spokesman Steve Bence said: "The train operating companies are extremely pleased that the threat of strike action has been averted and I'm sure our passengers will feel likewise.

"We are pleased that the talks involving Railtrack and the RMT have reached a constructive outcome and that the threat of disruption to the rail network has been lifted."
