Following the meeting held today (Monday) by the Health & Safety Commission, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) expressed satisfaction with the rail industry's action plan emerging from Professor Uff's report into the Southall rail crash (1997).
George Muir, Director General of ATOC, said: "Passenger safety is the first priority of everyone working in the rail industry. Today's meeting was very useful in identifying what the rail industry needs to do to address Professor Uff's recommendations. As far as the train operators are concerned, much work has already started, particularly in the area of Driver Management, where six codes of practice have already been issued for the information of all train operators. In the weeks ahead similar work will be done to identify best practice in aspects of Fleet Maintenance and work will start on a review of various Vehicle Design issues."
In responding to Professor Uff's recommendations, ATOC will work very closely with its members and all other industry partners, and will make sure that any necessary resources are provided.
