The Association of Train Operating Companies today noted the headline announcement of increased public spending on transport in the government's Comprehensive Spending Review. However, it is not yet clear if the Review will provide enough additional funding to deliver the bigger, better railway Government and passengers want.
ATOC Director General, George Muir, said: "£9bn certainly sounds a great deal of money but we await the 10 Year Transport Plan on Thursday, which will detail how this money is to be spent - in particular, how much will be spent on rail.
"For the past five years, every extra pound of income from rising passenger numbers has been taken out of the industry and handed back to the Treasury. This financial drain must be stopped. To build and run a bigger, better railway carrying 50% more passengers safely and reliably will cost around £52bn for infrastructure and £7bn for passenger trains over the next 10 years. We will play our part, but increased Government funds will be needed to help us achieve this goal."
