Commenting on the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) review of station retailing, ATOC Director of Commercial Services, Philip Benham, said:
"Earlier in the summer, ATOC issued a report to the Office of the Rail Regulator, Shadow Strategic Rail Authority and Rail Passenger Council on station retailing and we are awaiting their feedback.
"Some of the proposals would require the approval of the Rail Regulator before they could be implemented. One of the proposals suggests redefining the range of tickets that have to be sold at stations - particularly those tickets which have to be brought before the day of travel. This would take into account the actual demand for these tickets, bearing in mind that some stations sell very very few of them.
"We are convinced the proposals will benefit passengers and the industry by making it clear to passengers what tickets they can buy at which stations and by giving them reassurance about the quality of service they can expect. It will also help the train companies determine the right type of investment, both in training and equipment, according to the needs and wants of their passengers at each station.
"The facility to buy tickets on the day of travel at local stations for travel across the National Rail network will remain the same."
