Train operators welcome government's decision to ensure distribution of diesel
date 12 September 2000 source ATOC type Press release
The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) today welcomed the government's decision to take powers to control and ensure the distribution of fuel to public transport.
ATOC Director General, George Muir, said: "This is good news for public transport and in particular, the rail operators. With the distribution of diesel now guaranteed, train companies will be able to run their full timetables.
Mr Muir said the blockades are having little impact on the railways as a whole. "Two thirds of passenger journeys are made with train companies who operate on an electrified network. The railways will remain fully open and we urge people who don't usually travel by rail to give it a go."
