UK to receive £28 million from Europe for the transport Trans-European Network

The United Kingdom is to receive €46 million (about £28 million at the current rate of exchange) from Europe for the development of transport Trans-European Network (TEN) schemes and studies in 2000 Lord Macdonald, Minister of Transport, announced today.

Welcoming the news, Lord Macdonald said:

"I am pleased with the 2000 TEN settlement for the United Kingdom. We have again secured significant contributions for the two priority rail projects in the UK. I also welcome the continuing support for Manchester Airport and the new award for studies on the upgrading of roads in Northern Ireland."
The bulk of funds will go to the following TEN priority projects:

£18.4m to the Channel tunnel Rail Link
£9.2m to the West Coast Main Line
Other schemes to benefit:


Technical and geotechnical studies for the upgrade of the TEN route from Larne to Newry


A project to improve ground transport access to Manchester Airport

The UK is also a party to a number of multi-national TEN projects which have received awards this year. The value of the support to the UK should be about £3m.

Notes to editors
1. The development of the transport Trans-European Network (TEN) is provided for in Article 154-156 of the EC Treaty. The funding of the transport TENs was provided for in a Financial Regulation adopted by ECOFIN on 18 September 1995, replacing the Transport Infrastructure Fund (the other TENs cover telecommunications and energy supply).

2. At the Essen European Council in December 1994, 14 priority transport projects were identified which receive much of the transport TEN funding each year. These include in the UK the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the West Coast Main Line.

3. TEN awards granted to other Member States also benefit the UK. Passenger travel and the movement of goods across the European Union and into third countries are being constantly improved with support from the TEN budget.
