ATOC statement on passenger train performance

Commenting on the shadow Strategic Rail Authority's monthly Performance Report released today, ATOC Director General George Muir said: "Performance for the past three months has been disappointing. Running a record number of trains while carrying a record number of passengers has led to an increase in delays due to congestion on the network and reliability problems with rolling stock. These problems can only be reduced by delivering a high level of investment for infrastructure and new trains.

"The 10 Year Transport Plan, should deliver the necessary investment."

Mr Muir also pointed out that performance during autumn is likely to dip further. "Autumn is traditionally associated with slippery conditions created by leaves on the line. To combat this, our drivers will be concentrating on defensive driving techniques. Passenger safety is paramount.

"Defensive driving techniques include braking further out from stations, accelerating more slowly away from stationary positions and reducing the speed of trains in areas which have been identified as black spots for slippery conditions."
