Statement from Tom Winsor regarding the Hatfield accident

The Rail Regulator, Tom Winsor, today issued the following statement:

"In relation to the tragic accident at Hatfield yesterday, I wish to extend my condolences and those of my colleagues to the bereaved and injured, and their families and friends.

"My periodic review of Railtrack's access charges - decisions on the financial restructuring and strengthening of the railway industry and improving the accountability of the private sector companies to the public interest - is complete. It had been my intention to publish my conclusions tomorrow, Thursday 19 October 2000.

"As a mark of respect to those involved in yesterday's accident, I have decided not to publish my decision until Monday 23 October 2000. An announcement will be made via the Stock Exchange at 0700 that day."



NOTE FOR EDITORS

A press conference will be held at the Office of the Rail Regulator on Monday 23 October at 11am. Transport and city correspondents are welcome to attend. Mr Winsor will be available for interview. Interview requests should be directed to:
