George Muir, Director General of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said: "National Rail operators welcome the decision of the Railtrack Board that Gerald Corbett will remain in the post to lead the safety investment programmes we need in the industry.

"The industry, train operators and Railtrack, will meet together on Wednesday next week to discuss the way forward. The whole rail industry stands together. We are all responsible for safety."
