Commenting on Railtrack's offer of £150m compensation to train companies:

ATOC Director General, George Muir, said: "We note Railtrack's provision for compensation to train operating companies.

"It is still to early to know, as Railtrack acknowledges, whether it will be sufficient, but if it is not we expect Railtrack to make up the difference. Any money received by train operators will be used to compensate passengers for delays and make up lost revenue.

"The most urgent action for the industry remains getting the railway back to normal for passengers."
