Fifty-two signals were passed at danger in November 2000, the latest report published by Railtrack’s Safety and Standards Directorate shows.
The figure for the month is two fewer than November 1999 and 17 fewer than the average of the month for the past six years.
The report, the 14th monthly report to be produced by the directorate, also details statistics on who is responsible for a SPAD.
Data in the report gives a breakdown of SPADs since 1994/5, highlighting where responsibility has been allocated to an individual or to weather, rail or vegetation conditions. One table covers SPADs where an individual is held responsible and another highlights incidents where responsibility is shared.
The new information is aimed at helping tackle the root causes of SPADs in order to help prevent further incidents.
The report also reiterates ongoing concerns of the Safety and Standards Directorate at the lack of reduction in the number of starting against signal SPADs that occurred at platforms.
Fifteen of the 52 were at multi-SPAD signals (a signal which has had two SPADs in the last five years) and 20 occurred at signals with a previous SPAD record. Twenty of the total SPADs were in severity categories three to eight.
