ATOC confident of rebuilding passenger trust

Commenting on the MORI report commissioned by Railtrack with the support of ATOC into restoring public confidence in the railway, ATOC Director of Commercial Services Philip Benham said:

"Train operators are determined to restore passenger confidence quicker than the report suggests.

"The operators are developing initiatives aimed at winning back passengers and when services are back to normal, these initiatives will be used to encourage the passengers back onto trains.

"Prior to Hatfield, the industry was carrying more passengers than at any time since 1946. This growth was stimulated by railways offering comfortable and fast travel through a variety of cheap and flexible fares reflecting customer needs, which attracted passengers off congested roads. These benefits will continue once reliability is restored.

"The fundamental issue remains that, for the industry to restore passenger confidence, we must return to a reliable and punctual service. With 18 train companies now running normal services, Railtrack say they expect most of the network to be back to normal by the end of January and all services returned to normal by Easter."
