Prescott and Kiley agree to work together on the London Underground Public Private Partnership

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and Bob Kiley, Commissioner of Transport for London (TfL), today announced that they would work together on modifications to the Underground PPP. If they can agree mutually acceptable changes then the PPP bidders will be asked to submit revised proposals.

The Deputy Prime Minister said "Bob Kiley is assembling a strong management team in Transport for London. The private sector too can contribute through the PPP to rebuilding the Underground. I have asked Bob to take the lead in working up proposals for modifying the PPP. He will be working closely with Government and London Underground."

Bob Kiley commented "I recognise the role that the private sector can play in what must be a long term investment programme. But I want to see if the PPP structure can be modified so that there is unified management control over the operation, maintenance and renewal of the Underground."

Any modifications to the PPP will need to be agreed between the Government and Transport for London. It is anticipated, if there is agreement, there is likely to be another round of bidding with the existing bidding consortia asked to provide revised PPP proposals. The Government and TfL will jointly evaluate any revised proposals to decide whether they are acceptable to both parties.
