Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions

Statement by the DPM on Selby rail crash

  date 28 February 2001
source Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions
  type Press release

This is a dreadful accident at Selby.

Our immediate concern is for the passengers who have died and others who have suffered so tragically.

The Emergency Services have responded very quickly and have been on the scene in great numbers with their equipment doing everything to treat and free the injured and get them to hospital. We cannot speculate yet on the sequence of events that contributed to the crash, or on the exact number of casualties.

The Rail Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive are also on the scene investigating, as are the British Transport Police. Other agencies will be involved as required.

I hope to be on the scene shortly.

I will of course be making a full statement to the House.
