Rail passengers are rapidly returning to the rail network, latest figures from the Association of Train Operating Companies revealed today.
Figures for April show more than 1.6 million passenger journeys were made when compared with April 2000.
ATOC Director General, George Muir, said: "This is the first substantial increase in passenger journeys since the Hatfield accident and has coincided with improving train performance.
"A significant aspect in the recovery of passenger growth has been the excellent promotional campaigns by operators which has seen passenger journeys on Intercity operators recover from 21 per cent down in November last year to only two per cent down for April."
