Government response to tube judicial review judgement
Commenting on the judgement, Secretary of State for Transport Stephen Byers said:
''The Government welcomes this judgement. I know there have been concerns about safety and the role of the private sector.
''The Tube must be safe. London Underground will be responsible for safety, under the rigorous scrutiny of the Health and Safety Executive. The HSE will have a double safety lock for the plans to proceed. HSE must accept, firstly, London Underground safety plans and, secondly, the revised safety plans to reflect the role of the bidders.
''There will be no privatisation or part privatisation of the Tube under their plans. London Underground will own and run the Tube. London Underground will co-ordinate infrastructure work, drive the trains, operate the signals and staff the stations. It will be publicly run and privately built.
''The Tube urgently needs massive investment. London Underground can now finalise plans to invest #13 billion in the Tube.
''I hope everyone will accept this decision and work together to ensure the Tube gets the investment it desperately needs and the passengers get the service they deserve.''
