Modernisation is broad way forward for tube
Enhanced CCTV coverage, improved station layouts and better access for passengers with disabilities will help build a 21st Century system under the Tube modernisation plans, Transport Minister David Jamieson said today.
On a visit to Fulham Broadway, Mr Jamieson toured the major rebuilding works at the station and discussed modernisation plans for the Tube with London Underground staff. The plans will see dozens of Tube stations undergo major refurbishment during the first five years.
The Fulham Broadway redevelopment includes:
* Modifications to the station layout, including a new ticket office and new platform entry and exit points to improve accessibility;
* New lifts which will make the station fully accessible to passengers with disabilities and also help people with pushchairs or heavy luggage;
* Around 50 CCTV cameras throughout the station controlled by a new Station Operations room, to improve security for all passengers;
* A Station Supervisor''s Office and other staff accommodation;
* Revised football/emergency exits with sufficient capacity to deal with passengers travelling to and from football on Chelsea matchdays.
Speaking at Fulham Broadway, Mr Jamieson said:
''Fulham Broadway Tube station is undergoing a major transformation at present which will benefit passengers, staff and the police.
''The station will be more accessible for all passengers, particularly those with disabilities, and will feature a new ticket office and Station Operations room with around 50 CCTV cameras. These are exactly the kinds of improvements that we are planning for many stations on the network under the Tube modernisation plans.
''The passenger lifts being installed at Fulham Broadway will form part of a core network of stations with step-free access which will be further developed under the plans for a publicly run, privately built Tube.''
