The Association of Train Operating Companies today welcomed the news that fares for many passengers across the country will be reduced in the New Year.
ATOC Director of Commercial Services, Philip Benham, said: "This is good new for our passengers who have been understandably frustrated with the state of the service in the aftermath of the Hatfield accident. Commuters in London and the south east will particularly benefit through the SRA's fares scheme which links the price of fares to the performance of operators. This will see many fares in south east reducing in absolute terms.
"Furthermore, many operators are already providing discounts of between five and ten per cent under their passengers' charter commitments.
"I also welcome the news from the SRA that over the past year, fares overall have been held in line with the rate of inflation and indeed over the past five years have only increased 1.2% above inflation. This dispels the myth that the rail companies have annually hiked up fares above the level of inflation.
Also commenting on performance figures released today, Mr Benham said: "Obviously performance remains a concern. Nevertheless, there are encouraging signs and the recent figures show good improvement, including the inter-city routes which were worst hit by the speed restriction imposed following the Hatfield accident.
"Although there are variations day to day, four out five trains arrive at their destination on time."
