Jamieson welcomes 250 new jobs and opens new £30m train maintenance facility

Transport Minister David Jamieson today officially opened Bombardier Transportation''s new £30m Central Rivers train maintenance facility near Burton-on Trent.

The site will maintain the entire new fleet of 78 Voyager and tilting Super Voyager trainsets vehicles currently being built by Bombardier for use on the Virgin CrossCountry routes.

Speaking at the opening ceremony Mr Jamieson said:

''The continuing delivery of new trains such as the Voyager and Bombardier''s confidence to invest in this new maintenance facility are welcome steps towards creating the new railway envisaged in our 10 year Transport Plan.''

Central Rivers occupies a 29 acre site and will create 250 new jobs in the West Midlands. Welcoming this boost to the local economy David Jamieson said:

''The creation of 250 jobs here in the Burton area is particularly welcome. The manufacturing area is facing difficult challenges and new employment opportunities are needed in Burton as elsewhere. This investment represents a vote of confidence in the UK rail industry and in the West Midlands.''

The new facility was constructed in 12 months and is contracted to maintain the new Virgin CrossCountry fleet until 2012.

Notes to Editors

1. Bombardier completed the acquisition of train manufacturer Adtranz in May 2001 and now employs 5200 people in the UK rail industry. It''s parent company Bombardier Inc is based in Canada.

2. The fleet of 78 Voyager and Super Voyager trains are being built by Bombardier for use on Virgin CrossCountry services. The first batches of Voyagers are now being delivered and some units are already in service. By 2003 the new trains should allow Virgin to operate a much-improved clock-face timetable, with more frequent and faster services on many routes across the country.
