Commenting on the appointment of Richard Bowker as the new SRA Chairman, ATOC Director General, George Muir said: "We welcome Richard Bowker's appointment. He combines knowledge of railways - which really is essential - with financial and commercial experience. He has the personal and professional respect of the industry, and the drive and commitment to grapple with the very real issues facing the industry. He will need the total and consistent support of government in the difficult times ahead.
"The job he will have is extremely difficult. He must provide a new leadership and collaborative style for the industry and must somehow find the resources to deliver passenger benefits."
