GNER has welcomed the appointment of Richard Bowker as the new chairman of the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA), replacing Sir Alastair Morton who retires on 14 December.

GNER’s chief executive Christopher Garnett said: “Richard has both railway and finance experience, and should be a strong advocate for the rail industry. His appointment is a sound one and a step in the right direction.

“We look forward to working with, and supporting, Richard as he takes on the very difficult task of reinvigorating the SRA. One of his first priorities will be to develop and deliver a clear, fully-funded strategy which takes an impartial, balanced view on what’s best for passengers and the whole rail industry.

“I would also like to thank Sir Alastair for his significant contribution to the rail industry during some of its most difficult times. He genuinely wanted the railways to succeed and never shirked a challenge. On a personal level, he was very supportive of GNER and its management as we tackled the immediate aftermath of the tragedies at Hatfield and Great Heck. I wish him well for the future.”
