Network Rail today confirmed that preliminary planning discussions have taken place with Fenland District Council. The application, which is in its very early stages, involves the development of 108 acres of land at Whitemoor, March. The development of the former marshalling yard has been earmarked due to the closure of a Network Rail depot at Temple Mills. The depot is needed for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project and therefore needs to be relocated. Whitemoor has been proposed because of its vast size and its excellent strategic location for the maintenance of East Anglia’s railways.

Peter Heubeck, Project Manager said: “Over the next few weeks Network Rail will be talking to the local community about this project. Many people in March remember the old marshalling yard, and are excited about the prospect of the railway coming back. We thank the community for their support so far.”

Network Rail will continue to work with the local authority and community during the planning phase. The development of the site will bring many benefits to both the local community and East Anglia. Visuals for the site will be displayed when they have been completed and comprehensive details of the plan will be released once the planning application has been submitted.
