Network Rail plans to restore March as strategic railway site

Network Rail has had further meetings with district and county planning officials to discuss in outline their plans for the former marshalling yard at Whitemoor, March. The site has been proposed as a regional engineering supply depot.
The site is uniquely suited to this role because of its large size, good links to the rail network and excellent strategic location for the maintenance of East Anglia’s railway network. Plans include the development of sidings for modern engineering trains and locomotive storage, areas for stockpiles of ballast and a recycling facility for the aggregate.
Peter Heubeck, Network Rail Project Director said: “We envisage developing the site in stages over the next 2-3 years, with the first planning application being submitted early this summer. Our proposals will once again make March an important railway centre. ”
Mark Vigor, Head of Strategic Planning for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council have created a joint planning team to assist in processing the planning application to be submitted by Network Rail and to assess the proposals prior to a decision.”
Network Rail takes its responsibilities as a neighbour very seriously and has already started public consultation. An exhibition is also planned for mid-April, ahead of submitting the formal planning application, so it can incorporate local views.
