Network Rail has announced the six companies who are to be awarded 10-year structure assessment contracts for Britain’s railway. The multi-million pound contracts include the assessment of bridges, viaducts and arches, structures which support buildings and span across operational railway lines as well as train sheds, tunnels, platform canopies platform structures and signal gantries. The works comprise the inspection and assessment of structural integrity and loadbearing capacity of the structures including fatigue assessments with programmed reviews.
There are six contracts (one for each of the six zones/regions) each for a period of 10 years commencing on April 1st 2003 and all let on the basis of a Co-operative Partnering Agreement using the Network Rail Conditions for a Service Contract as a basis. The successful bids, which were chosen following a round of contract negotiations, are: ·
Eastern Region - Corus Rail Consultancy Ltd with Bullen Consultants Ltd and Owen Williams Railways as prime sub-contractors. -
Great Western Zone - WSP Civils Ltd with Pell Frischmann Consultants Ltd as prime sub-contractor. ·
Midland Region - Owen Williams Railways Limited with Veryards Ltd as prime sub-contractor. ·
North West Zone - Veryards Ltd with Parkman Ltd as prime sub-contractor. ·
Scotland Zone - Babtie Group Ltd. · Southern Region - Mott MacDonald Limited with Mouchel Consulting Limited and Rail First Limited as prime sub-contractors.
Danny Mair, Network Rail’s Head of Supply for Structures, Buildings, Stations and Depots said: “Improved asset stewardship is one of Network Rail’s key goals and we are confident that the chosen engineering consultants will help us achieve that aim.”
