Permanent Secretary, Department for Transport
The Prime Minister, with the agreement of the Secretary of State for Transport, has approved the appointment of David Rowlands as Permanent Secretary of the Department for Transport. Rachel Lomax is to become Deputy Governor of the Bank of England.
Secretary of State for Transport Alistair Darling said:
"I am delighted that David Rowlands has been appointed Permanent Secretary at the Department. He brings with him a formidable experience and reputation on transport and will help ensure that the Government's policies for improving transport are delivered."
Notes for Editors
David Rowlands started his career with IMI plc. He joined the Department of Trade & Industry in the mid 70s and moved to the Department of Transport in 1983 where he held a number of posts with responsibilities for aviation, shipping and ports and railways. He is currently Director General, Railways, Aviation, Logistics Maritime and Security and led the creation of Network Rail after Railtrack was put into administration and the successful delivery of Public Private Partnerships for the London Underground and the National Air Traffic Services.
David is aged 55 and married with two sons.
