Network Rail has announced that it has taken over responsibility for the management and operation of Liverpool Lime Street station. This brings the total number of stations directly managed by Network Rail to 17. Network Rail has considerable experience of managing large stations across the UK in areas such as cleanliness, customer service and security. The move will enable Network Rail to ensure best practice is applied to signage to make it easier for station users to get around as well as safety management, information and announcements and customer service skills training. Passengers will also benefit from improved toilet facilities, better security including CCTV, new luggage trolleys and upgrades to the retail facilities.

Liverpool Lime Street is a Grade II listed railway interchange with a rich heritage in the city that it serves. The station provides services for First North Western, Virgin West Coast, Arriva Trains Northern, Central Trains and Wales & Borders Trains. Lime Street is also closely linked to the Merseyrail underground station, which has direct services from the Liverpool loop to New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port.

Deborah Richards, Director of Railway Estates, says, “We look forward to using our experience to provide the train operating companies with customer service excellence at Liverpool Lime Street. Now, along with our industry partners and the Liverpool city council we will be working hard to create a fitting entrance way to the city that is the European Capital of Culture in 2008.”
