Commenting on the latest train performance figures released today by the Strategic Rail Authority, George Muir, Director General of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) said:
"The 2% rise in passenger numbers over the past year is good news. It shows that the new trains, improving customer information and on board service are making train travel increasingly attractive.
We are approaching a key milestone. We now predict that there will be more than one billion passenger journeys travelled by rail this calendar year - the highest level since 1962 when car travel was a fraction of what it is today - confirming that Britain has one of Europe’s fastest growing railways.
"We are also pleased that the number of customer complaints is significantly down and hope this trend can be maintained as rail travel continues to change for the better."
"However, while 10 train operators have improved their punctuality, overall levels remain static. The whole industry is working very hard to improve punctuality. Performance was adversely affected by the sustained hot weather during August which resulted in temporary speed restrictions on large parts of the intercity and busy commuter networks."
