Regulator approves new Railway Group Standards code
Rail Regulator, Tom Winsor, today approved the new Railway Group Standards Code which was submitted for his approval by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) on 30 October 2003, with the full support of RSSB's members, drawn from across the rail industry.
Tom Winsor said: "This new Railway Group Standards Code is a positive example of the benefits of the establishment of the Rail Safety and Standards Board.
"It is a clear and unambiguous document that represents a significant improvement over the existing Code.
"Working together, the rail industry has produced a new Code that will serve as a firm foundation for the establishment of Railway Group Standards that will, in turn, support rail industry parties in meeting the challenges they face in providing a safe, reliable and efficient railway.
"The Railway Group Standards Code establishes the procedures for the creation, modification and bolition of Railway Group Standards.
"Railway Group Standards are the operational procedures and technical standards designed to facilitate the safe operation of the rail network.
"The new Railway Group Standards Code provides for much greater involvement of rail industry players in the Railway Group Standards process.
Notes for editors:
1. The Regulator expects the new Railway Group Standards Code to supersede the current Code on 19 January 2004, when it will be published on the RSSB website www.rssb.co.uk.
2. RSSB was established as a result of Lord Cullen's inquiry into the tragic accident at Ladbroke Grove. Lord Cullen recommended that the Rail Regulator should take forward, with the industry, the establishment of the new safety body.
