Hull Trains confirms that there will be an increase in its fares from 4 January. The company's last fare increase was fifteen month ago and since then there has been a substantial investment in new trains and more services.
As of 4 January the average standard return fare increase is 6.15%, however, and for the majority of customers the average increase will be 5.4%, with one of the most popular fares, the saver return fare increase capped at 2.4%. Hull Trains' APEX return to London has increased by £1.50 to £29.00, still representing outstanding value.
Managing Director, Mark Leving said: "Although the headline figure is above inflation, a number of factors have been taken into account in reaching this decision, under the broad headings of investment and operational costs. We have worked hard to increase and improve services in 2004. An extra service has been introduced and, at same time, over £36m has been in invested in two tranches of new rolling stock. This major investment aside, operating more services has increased staff costs, and more services has meant a rise in network access charges. Other operating costs, quite out the control of the company, have also increased including RPI increases to network access charges.
This year, in the shadow wider security issues that have affected the country as a whole, the charges Hull Trains contributions to the British Transport Police have increased. Concurrently, world events have forced up the price of fuel to record levels and this has added to operating cost significantly.
