The third train in Hull Train’s new fleet of Class 222 Pioneers will be named after a visionary figure who has quite literally become the architect of a great part of Hull’s future. Sir Terry Farrell was at a ceremony at London Kings Cross on Tuesday, September 6 to name the ‘Pioneer’ train in his honour.
Sir Terry Farrell at the naming ceremony at London King's Cross Station. As the architect of one of Hull’s most striking and innovative new buildings, The Deep, Terry Farrell has been credited as one of the leading figures in the development and regeneration of Hull. His involvement in the River Hull Corridor Master Plan/ HULL 2020, will be a legacy that will benefit generations of Hull residents to come. The planned site covers some 380 acres to the west of the Historic Old Town of Hull and the vision for this site is currently becoming a reality. This ambitious new development is just a part of the city’s renaissaiance as a thriving centre and regional capital.
The Deep itself is one of Hull’s most popular tourist attractions. As the world’s only Submarium, it attracts thousands of visitors each year to its underwater adventure. It has been heralded as a world class site and the inward investment that it attracts has proven to be a major boon for the city. Not only is the Deep a visually stunning structure, it is a practical multi purpose site, housing a state of the art business centre.
Mark Leving , Hull Trains Managing Director, said: “We wanted to acknowledge a figure that had really shaped the future of Hull and we were delighted that Sir Terry Farrell agreed to lend his name to the third train in our new fleet.
"One of our main goals is promoting Hull as the perfect tourist destination, with our faster, direct services bringing the attractions of Hull even closer than before. The Deep has already proven to be a world class tourist destination and the work of Sir Terry Farrell will be the platform from which the city can secure its position as one of the county’s most vibrant and popular tourist destinations. It is appropriate that the ceremony should be taking place just as The Deep has been nominated as one of the region’s leading building projects at the Pro Yorkshire Awards. Investment in the city is very important to us and we hope that others will be inspired by the example of Sir Farrell to make a positive contribution to the city of Hull.”
Terry Farrell commented: “It was a pleasure to be asked to dedicate one of Hull Trains new Pioneers. When working on The Deep, myself and my team wanted to make a lasting impression on the city. We wanted it to be something that not only looked stunning but would make a real impact on the city. I am delighted that Hull Trains is encouraging people from across the country to come and see Hull for themselves, as it really has a lot to offer.”
