The fourth of Hull Trains’ new state of the art Class 222 train sets was named after one of the city’s most famous "adopted” sons. Dr. John Godber was in the city on Tuesday, September 13 to see the Pioneer train named in his honour at a ceremony at Hull’s Paragon station at 11.30am.

Although he was born in Upton, West Yorkshire, John Godber has been embraced by the people of Hull as the voice of the city. He became artistic director of Hull Truck in 1984 and his work with the company has gone a long way in securing Hull’s place as a centre of excellence in theatrical innovation.

Hull Truck is soon to be at the heart of Hull’s renaissance when it moves to its new home within the St. Stephen’s development. It is hoped that this new arts centre will become a cultural hub for the city.

As a world renowned playwright, John Godber’s works are amongst the most performed plays in the English language. His plays have received critical acclaim with Up ‘N’ Under winning the Laurence Olivier Comedy of the Year award in 1984. He has also written and directed numerous works for film and television, and the silver screen adaptation of Up ‘N’ Under was a huge box office success.

Commenting on the train naming, John Godber said : “I am extremely flattered. I’m very humbled by the honour and I hope it’s never late! ”

Mark Leving , Hull Trains’ Managing Director, commented: “John Godber was the perfect candidate as the namesake of our fourth Pioneer train. What John has done for the city cannot be measured in terms of box office sales or accolades. He has inspired people young and old to get involved in the theatre and to become passionate about the experience. Although his plays have universal appeal, there is something that is quintessentially Hull about them; he captures the heart of the city. He has done something that very few other people can do; get people who would not ordinarily set foot inside a theatre, to keep coming back to Hull Truck time and time again.

"We are currently promoting Hull as a great tourist destination and the work of John means that Hull really can rival anything that the West End has to offer.”
