Trial of vehicle access barriers at two London rail terminals

London's Waterloo and Victoria stations are to take part in a new trial to test vehicle access barriers at the main vehicle entrance to each station's concourse.

The purpose of the trial is to assess the impact that the barriers may have on the day-to-day operations of each station and gauge the opinions of passengers and businesses that use the stations.

The trials, and the stations chosen to host them, are purely to inform future analysis about the appropriateness and value of such barriers and are not direct measures to enhance security at each station. It is expected that both trials will last for around three months.

The barriers, which will be installed in the next few days, are about a metre in height and will prevent access by vehicles but still allow passengers to walk past to and from the platforms. The barriers will be opened to allow vehicle access when necessary, e.g. deliveries onto the concourse, and can also be opened at very short notice to allow access for emergency services.

Secretary of State for Transport Douglas Alexander said:

The potential role for such barriers is obvious, but what we want to do now is test the impact on the flow of passengers and on the station operations and businesses based within them.

It is important that we test any potential measure within authentic environments so that we can see just how they can contribute towards keeping a safe and efficient network. And of course, as with any such trial, all the feedback that we receive will be welcome and valuable when making any future decisions.

Robin Gisby, Director of Operations and Customer Services, Network Rail said :

"Security at railway stations is a high priority for Network Rail and for passengers. It is important that the railway industry consider all the options on station security and this trial will allow the impact of these barriers to be properly assessed and analysed."

These trials are the latest in a series of tests that began earlier this year to assess the effectiveness of different measures on the rail and tube environments. No decisions will be taken on any such measures until they have been fully assessed and all the data and feedback gained during the trials are merely to inform any future judgments.

Notes for Editors

1. Barriers will be placed across vehicle access points at Victoria and Waterloo stations for a temporary period and studies during the trial will assess any effect on passenger movements at different times of the day.

2. Transport security is kept under constant review. This series of trials follows the review of rail security announced in a Written Statement to Parliament from former Secretary of State for Transport Alistair Darling on March 10th 2005.
