Regular rail services resume after 25 year gap
Hourly services connecting Nottingham and Leeds running again
Regular services connecting Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds have been brought back on line 25 years after the brakes were applied on the rail link, Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon announced today.
The first of the new direct hourly services, which are being reintroduced by Northern Rail following demands from the Department for Transport, rolled out of Nottingham station this morning.
Geoff Hoon said:
"We're committed to getting people back on the railways and making the most of the existing railway lines we have and this goes some way towards improving services across the region.
"We carried out an extensive consultation across the region and it was clear there was a huge demand, both from local people and the business community."
Notes for Editors
1. The new service is the result of several years of hard work between Nottinghamshire County Council, East Midlands Regional Assembly and Regional Development Agency, together with several local MPs, South Yorkshire PTE and Northern Rail.
2. DfT announced in November 2006 that Northern had been chosen to start the service from December 2008.
3. Previously a service linking the three cities has been operated by Midland Mainline. They operated seven trains a day between Sheffield and Nottingham, all of which ran during the early morning or late evening; two of which extended to Leeds. The DfT's proposal was to increase the number of daily services between Leeds and Nottingham to 28 running throughout the day.
4. The new service provides a train every hour in each direction for: Leeds, Wakefield Kirkgate, Barnsley, Meadowhall, Sheffield, Chesterfield, Alfreton, Nottingham. Dronfield and Langley Mill stations will also benefit from additional calls.
5. Sheffield, Chesterfield and Alfreton both now benefit from two trains an hour to Nottingham, in conjunction with East Midlands Trains.
