Commenting on Lord Adonis’ announcement today on station improvements, Michael Roberts, Chief Executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said:
“Train companies are keen to move faster on initiatives to improve stations and have been calling for quicker procedures to approve projects. We have also recently put proposals to the Department for Transport to bring forward further improvements, such as much-needed extra car parking space at over 60 stations.
“We very much look forward to the Ministerial initiative being announced today giving a boost to such ideas and enabling operators to deliver the passenger improvements we want to make more quickly.
“Existing commitments include a £150 million programme to introduce better passenger facilities (such as better toilets, waiting rooms and retail facilities) in at least 150 stations across England and Wales.
“These measures will build on the work train companies have already undertaken. Over the past five years, Passenger Focus’ National Passenger Survey has shown steady improvements in people’s satisfaction in such areas as the overall environment of stations, their cleanliness and the upkeep of buildings and platforms.”
