RDG emphasises the importance of an efficient railway
Responding to the publication by the Office of Rail Regulation of a report on "GB rail financial information 2011-2012" the Rail Delivery Group has emphasised the importance of an efficient railway that provides benefits to passengers, freight shippers and taxpayers.
The ORR?s study shows that the cost of the rail industry is reducing after taking inflation into account. When combined with increased revenue this has enabled funding by the Governments to be reduced.
Commenting on the report Graham Smith, Director-General of the Rail Delivery Group said:
“The Rail Delivery Group recognises the paramount importance of increasing industry efficiency. The RDG?s work on asset management, embracing new technology andi dentifying opportunities to improve retailing will all enhance the value for money of the industry.”
“The ORR?s report demonstrates that the industry recognises the importance of increasing efficiency. Under the RDG’s leadership the industry will work to identify further ways of improving efficiency. The fresh start to the franchising process, combined with improved efficiency, will allow the rail industry to provide improved benefits to users and taxpayers.”
Graham Smith continued:
“Improving the efficiency of a growing railway gives provides Governments with options. Funding released by increased efficiency can be used on a combination of passenger benefits, reducing the call on the taxpayer and increasing investment.”
Graham Smith concluded:
“At a time when the use of the railway by passengers and freight shippers continues to increase it is easy to forget that growth must be delivered efficiently. By encouraging operators, suppliers and Network Rail to work together the RDG is creating efficiency opportunities that will come to fruition over the next five years. It is essential however, thatthe RDG is supported in its work by funders, regulators and stakeholders so that we can achieve our shared objective of an ever-improving railway.”
