Dry train policy reintroduced to Friday service following successful trials
Train operator East Coast is to reintroduce a zero-alcohol policy on one of its busy Friday services from Aberdeen following successful trials in 2013.
The Friday-only restriction, which prohibits carrying or consuming alcohol will apply from this Friday, 11 April, on East Coast’s 09.52 Aberdeen to London King’s Cross service as far as Newcastle.
After departure from Aberdeen the train calls at Stonehaven, Montrose, Arbroath, Dundee, Leuchars, Kirkcaldy, Inverkeithing and Edinburgh Haymarket en route to Edinburgh Waverley. It then continues south to Berwick-upon-Tweed, Newcastle, Darlington, York and London King’s Cross.
The dry train policy is to be reintroduced to this train only following close co-operation between East Coast and the British Transport Police. It follows previous issues with the behaviour of a small minority of passengers which led to a six-month trial alcohol ban on-board this service only.
East Coast Head of Safety Lesley Heath said: “Together with the transport police, we have carefully reviewed the results of last year’s trial implementation of our dry train policy on this train. As a result, fewer incidents of disorder took place on the service.
“We also saw a significant reduction in the number of complaints from other passengers. Several customers contacted us to support the decision to trial an alcohol ban and suggested it should return again this year.
“Security personnel will be travelling on-board this service to support our own staff and the transport police in ensuring that alcohol is not brought on-board or consumed on the train.
“The policy is being reintroduced to ensure all passengers can enjoy a safe and comfortable journey. We ask all our customers to help us by observing these restrictions.”
As part of last year’s trial, group bookings for more than ten people travelling together were withdrawn from the Friday morning Aberdeen service. Following a thorough review, the group booking facility is to be reinstated along with a reminder that the alcohol restriction applies to everyone travelling.
Similar zero alcohol restrictions are applied to specific train services on selected dates throughout the year, in association with sporting or entertainment events and following discussions with the transport police.
