Commenting on late May Bank Holiday improvement works, a spokesperson for the Rail Delivery Group which speaks on behalf of the rail industry said: "Britain has a fast growing and increasingly popular railway and work goes on every day of the year to maintain our record as the safest major network in Europe.

"Larger improvement projects are carried out when the network is quieter and this work to deliver faster, more reliable journeys, is planned carefully to ensure that the vast majority of passengers will not be disrupted."

This late May Bank Holiday there will be over per 7.7% fewer buses used to replace trains than compared with the same holiday last year and 5.4% more train services.

Network Rail carries out improvement works to maintain and enhance the rail network by renewing track, cables and enhancing stations.
