At £4bn a year, government funding for the railway was the same in 2012-13 as in 1994-95 in real terms, according to accountants KPMG.

Over the same period, passenger numbers have doubled to 1.5bn a year (now 1.6bn), and the number of services running each year has increased by more than a quarter since 1997 (the earliest date for which figures are available).

Government funding per journey is £2.35, 29% lower than in the first full year of privatisation, and the same or lower than in seven of the last 12 years of BR.
