Labour supports HS2 but vital economic benefits are felt as widely as possible
date 25 March 2015 source Labour Party type Press release
Michael Dugher MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, responding to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee report on HS2, said:
“Labour supports HS2 as it will increase capacity and play an important part in developing a modern railway fit for the future. But it’s vital that Ministers win public confidence for this important investment and ensure that the economic benefits are felt as widely as possible.
“The Government should also be ensuring that the development of HS2 is used to help get young people into work and that those who are impacted by the route are properly compensated.
“Under this Tory-led Government, there have been legitimate concerns about rising costs. That’s why we have said there will be no blank cheque for the project under Labour.”
