The RMT rail union, representing some almost 16,000 rail workers, has announced it will be suspending industrial action planned for next week.

Mark Carne, Network Rail chief executive, said: “The national rail strike planned for next week will now not be going ahead. We welcome the RMT’s decision.”

Notes to editors:

o With the RMT also now suspending its action - following the decision earlier this afternoon from the TSSA - the national rail strike planned for next week has effectively been called off

o We expect all services planned to run over the bank holiday weekend to be reinstated as well as the planned improvement work scheduled
