ORR statement – Regulator supports international level crossing awareness day
Statement from Ian Prosser, Director of railway safety, Office of Rail and Road (ORR) supporting International Level Crossing Awareness Day.
Ian Prosser, Director of railway safety, Office of Rail and Road said:
"ORR's work to improve safety at Great Britain's level crossings never stops, and although amongst the safest in Europe, more needs to be done to raise awareness of the risks associated with them.
"The regulator wants the industry to keep improving railway safety, which is why we recently approved over £100 million of ring fenced funding for Network Rail to reduce risks and close level crossings.
"Already 118 crossings have been closed in 2014-15 and where full closure is not possible we will work with Network Rail, governments, industry and the public to deliver innovative solutions, to make level crossings safer."
