Train fare rise shameful highway robbery – Cortes

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has compared a rise in rail fares in 2020 to highway robbery, and those running the railways having “no shame”.

Trains fares will rise by an average of 2.7 per cent next year, it’s been confirmed. The figures, from the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) - which represents private train operators - will add significantly to many annual season tickets.

Cortes said: “Highwayman may be a thing of legends but there is nothing even remotely romantic about our train robber barons.

“The shop stewards for the privateers, the ill-named Rail Delivery Group, continue to defend the indefensible - fare hikes and profits being extracted from our passengers. The cosy, fleecing cartel running our railways have no shame.

“The Tory Frankenstein experiment of rail privatisation has more than run its course. Passengers are sick to their back teeth of paying for boardroom largesse and eye-watering fares.

“Thankfully, on December 12th millions of passengers can change this. Vote Labour to end this rip off by bringing our railways back into public ownership.”

NOTES
The overall cost of train travel has gone up by 46% since 2009 according to TUC analysis of figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
