Dura Composites

Delivering the lowest carbon walkways in the world
The rail infrastructure sector – one of the largest users of composite materials – is under increasing pressure to reduce embodied carbon, improve sustainability, and align with net-zero commitments.
Recognising this industry-wide problem, Dura Composites set out to redefine sustainability in the composite sector, developing the lowest carbon composite walkways in the world, known as d². The d² product range for rail includes modular platforms, structural stair treads, trackside walkways, driver access platforms, structural profiles and canopy daggerboards that boast a range of benefits:
• Up to 33% lighter by design.
• Engineered for exceptional structural performance, enabling better load-bearing capacity with less material.
• Superior durability and safety with a design life of up to 60 years.
• Uniquely, d² products can be fully repurposed at the end of their long lifecycle via a highly engineered proprietary mechanical process.
• Modular formats reduce waste, and prefabrication at our UK SmartFAB Centre improves accuracy for on-site installation.
As well as a significant reduction in carbon achieved by the products themselves, the weight reduction also helps save carbon during transportation and installation. This reduction can equate to a 4-tonne weight saving for a full lorry load of goods, reducing vehicle emissions, and road and vehicle wear, while maximising efficient fuel usage.
Only 13 HGVs would be required to deliver 2 x 200m of d2 Dura Platform for example, compared to 119 HGVs required to deliver 2 x 200m of pre-cast concrete station platform.
Since 2019, Dura has helped its clients avoid nearly 8 million kg CO₂e emissions and saved 2.3 million kg of raw materials. To offset this amount of carbon, over 1.1 million trees would need to have been planted and let grow for ten years, which would cover an area of over 500 football fields.
Using d2 products in rail applications not only provides market-leading durability, resistance, and safety but also has a huge impact on reaching sustainability goals and net-zero targets.
