Building resilience across the railway
Working on the railway can be rewarding, but it can also place significant pressure on people. Shift patterns, operational demands, organisational change and challenging incidents can affect emotional wellbeing.
Resilience is not about simply ‘toughing it out’.
It is about recognising pressure, responding constructively, recovering from difficult experiences and knowing when support may be needed.
Paideia Coaching was created by Railway Mission in response to requests from the rail industry.
Its aim is to help railway people strengthen their resilience while becoming more confident in supporting colleagues.
Railway Resilience: Supporting Yourself and Others is a practical, interactive half day course designed specifically for those working
across the rail industry. Through discussion, reflection and railway based scenarios, participants learn how to recognise signs of stress
in themselves and others, understand personal triggers and limits, and use practical techniques to recover and reset.
The course also helps people begin supportive conversations with confidence, listen without feeling responsible for fixing the problem, and
identify when further help may be appropriate. It is suitable for frontline staff, operational teams, managers, supervisors, wellbeing professionals
and pastoral support teams. No previous coaching or mental health qualification is required.
Early and supportive conversations can prevent difficulties from escalating. They can help teams become more connected, encourage
people to seek support sooner and contribute to a healthier workplace culture. The training is delivered by Andy Mitchell, whose calm and
accessible approach creates a safe environment for honest discussion.
Paideia Coaching is endorsed by Chartered Institute of Rail Operators (CIRO), and attendees receive a CIRO endorsed certificate.
The open courses are available to individuals who want to strengthen their resilience and ability to support others. They are also open to companies
wishing to invest in the wellbeing and resilience of their people. Employers can book places for individual
employees or small groups without commissioning a full in-house course.
