A new monthly title began to appear in July 1862, entitled ‘The Great Western Magazine: A Miscellany of Fact and Fiction’. Although it was not produced by the company, it was controlled by a committee of five GWR officials. The last edition was published in June 1864.
The second Great Western Railway Magazine was launched in 1888 and continued until the end of 1947, as the parent company retained its name and identity in the 1923 ‘Grouping’.
In its early years, it was produced by volunteer members of the staff. The first editor was J K Skellern, who worked in the goods office at Paddington.
The subtitle ‘Temperance Union Record’ was only used for the first two years, but the activities of the Union continued to be reported in the magazine into the twentieth century.
The Magazine became the official journal of the company in 1903, and Felix John Clewett Pole (1877-1956), a member of the Chief Engineer’s office, was appointed editor. After further promotions, he became the General Manager of the GWR in 1921 and was knighted three years later.
The GWR Temperance Union continued to exist until 1922, when it was expanded and renamed the Social and Educational Union. Later it became the GWR Staff Association.
