A New Year message from the General Manager

Great Western Railway Magazine January 1947

The Southern Railway had just one year to go when the first edition of the company magazine for 1947 was published.

By now, the government’s intention to nationalise the railways had become clear, with a Transport Bill on the way.

Inside this issue, Southern General Manager Sir Eustace Missenden told the staff that ‘It is now the business of Parliament to decide …’.

For supporters of the Southern Railway, the words of the advertisement on the front cover had a second meaning, because as far as the company was concerned the daylight was indeed fading.
