Lord Portal’s farewell message

Wyndham Raymond Portal, 1st Viscount Portal (1885-1947), was a member of the Portal family which manufactured paper for Bank of England notes. He was the eldest son of Sir William Wyndam Portal, 2nd Baronet, and Florence Elizabeth Mary Glyn, daughter of Hon St Leger Glyn, the 2nd son of George Glyn, 1st Baron Wolverton.
He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. After a military career, he became the Chairman of Portal’s in 1919.
In 1935 he became Chairman of the British Olympic Association and led the British team in the Berlin Olympics of 1936. He was also President of the first post-war Olympics in London, which were held in 1948.
Meanwhile, he had accepted the chairmanship of the Great Western Railway in 1945, and was therefore the company’s final Chairman.
