General Manager’s message

The New Year’s message for 1947 from Sir Eustace Missenden thanked the staff for their efforts and wished them well, but he also warned them that changes were imminent, as nationalisation approached.

In the event, Sir Eustace would move on from the Southern Railway to become Chairman of the new Railway Executive.

The South Western Gazette, mentioned in the heading of this page, was a newspaper which had been founded in 1881, although it was mainly concerned with the South Western Orphanage rather than the railway.

The Gazette ceased to be a newspaper when it became the South Western Magazine in 1915. This title was then replaced by the Southern Railway Magazine when the railways were ’grouped’ in 1923.
