The new diesel-electric locomotive on the front cover of ‘Carry On’ was the result of a project started by the LMS before nationalisation.
A second 1600hp machine was also under construction, and the magazine reported that there were plans to use both locomotives in multiple to provide traction of 3200hp on main line trains between London and Glasgow. They were also to work separately on express freight trains.
Two specially modified steam engines had also been ordered so that the two types of power could be compared in service. At the time of publication the first of these engines had just been completed at Crewe.
